Stingrays receive a $100,000 Trillium grant
The Newmarket Stingrays Swim Club has received a $100,000 Ontario Trillium Foundation grant over three years, President Bernie Wollenzien told a parents information night. “Most of the money will go to upgrading equipment, including computers and underwater photography to show swimmers where they can improve their technique,” he explained. “It will also help keep fees down despite rising pool rental costs.”
Nevertheless, the club has booked time in the new Aurora pool, which will be available on Sunday and Wednesday mornings. The club has also told St. Andrews that it is looking for more pool time if it becomes available. While features in the new Newmarket pool on Mulock were positive, he said the club, as a future primary tenant, needed direct consultation on its ongoing development. The Town has since invited the club to a meeting to give its input on the design of the new pool. He hopes this direct consultation will continue.
The Club has also applied to rejoin the Magna Hoedown, which raises funds for Region organizations. “If successful we must have a big commitment from members for event volunteers and raffle ticket sales, for example,” he explained.
