Club’s Hoedown volunteers did a ‘WOW!’ job

October 31st, 2006 | Dan Kershaw | Fundraising, Newsletter, Stingray News

Either the Magna Hoedown was a pretty exciting event, or the Stingrays members saw it as a challenge to be the best – or they really wanted that electronic timer in the new pool when it opens next Spring.

Whatever the reason they outdid themselves – again – in their support of the Club’s charitable participation in the Magna Hoedown in September. After not being in it for a few years, Stingrays members proved they are one of the best sports clubs in York Region.

  • The Club had to sell 1,200 raffle tickets for the event. The members involved sold 2,850! Number one among the groups.
  • They had to sell 50 event tickets (at $50 each). They sold 73!
  • They had to provide 10 Silent Auction items worth at least $250 or $2,500. Members contributed 30 for a total value of $20,000!
  • They had to distribute posters throughout the whole of Georgina. It took three days and six hour shifts but the volunteers covered the whole area with Hoedown posters
  • Club volunteers staffed two Hoedown displays at the Upper Canada Mall.
  • They provided volunteers for four divisional tours of Magna facilities to sell tickets. They only had to do two.
  • The Club provided a list of volunteers who helped set up, run the Hoedown Showdown and Aurora Rib Fest, and clean up afterward. Another 14 Stingrays members volunteered when Magna asked for the extra help, and 30 Stingrays swimmers were the largest volunteers for the cleanup on the Sunday morning.

Director of Fundraising Ann Marie Burlton, who spearheaded the whole project, said 38 Club members (adults) and six non-members helped throughout the four months of participation after the Club was accepted by Magna as one of its charitable groups in June.

She singled out Vicky Batters for her reconciliation of all the raffle tickets held by the membership; Mari-Lynn Wikant for promoting the very successful Silent Auction – and supporting Ann Marie throughout the project; and Janet Grant for organizing all the volunteers and their various tasks at the Hoedown itself.

“The Hoedown was a huge country party and a big success,” Ann Marie reported. “It raised an estimated $420,000, from which the various participating charity organizations will benefit,” she said. “We will inform all members in November when Magna reports back to all the organizations on their shares.”

It was a “WOW!” job by Ann Marie and all the volunteers!
