Ellison Selected to Academic All-American Third Team
Junior swimmer carries a
3.98 GPA as a physics major
YPSILANTI, Mich. — Junior swimmer Don Ellison (King City, Ontario-King City Secondary) was selected to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA)/ESPN the Magazine men’s at large Academic All-American third team, CoSIDA announced Tuesday, June 10. Ellison becomes the first ever male swimmer to receive Academic All-American honors and the 14th-ever Eastern Michigan student-athlete to earn the award.
Ellison, who has a 3.98 GPA in physics, is one of 17 men named to the third team. He was eligible for national team consideration after being named to the first team All-District list last month (May 22). Nominated by members of CoSIDA, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore in academic and athletic eligibility, be an integral part of the team and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests on the year. At-large men’s sports are swimming and diving, wrestling, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, fencing, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling.
Ellison helped lead the Eagles to their second consecutive and 27th overall Mid-American Conference title this past season. He was named MAC Swimmer of the Week once (Feb. 5), following the Eagles’ 50th consecutive MAC dual meet win. Ellison won three events (100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke and the 200 IM) to help EMU defeat Miami University and accomplish this historic feat.
At the MAC Championship Meet, Ellison was selected first team All-MAC after winning in the 400 IM, as well as being part of the winning 400 medley relay team and 800 freestyle relay team. At the Championships, he was also runner-up in the 200 IM and 200 breaststroke. The King City, Ontario native was also named academic All-MAC for the second consecutive season.
