Pan Pacific Championships – Summary!

August 13th, 2010 | Stingray Office Manager | Stingray News

Linday Seemann and Matthew Swanston have completed swimming at the Pan Pacific Championships.  The meet was referred to as ” the Olympics without Europe”, in other words the competition had all of the best swimmers in the world there, with the exception of the Europeans.
The format of the meet was that only 2 swimmers per country could advance to the A final, and if they did, then only one additional swimmer from that country could advance to the B final.  In other words, a maximum of 3 swimmers per country could advance to finals.   This made the competition in the prelims very fierce and fast, as swimmers were racing against their countrymen for a spot in the final.  This also created many upsets.  For example, Michael Phelps was only the 3rd fastest American in the prelims of the 400 IM, (an event in which he holds the world record and was Olympic champion), and therefore was bumped to the B final (which he went on to scratch).  Likewise, Olympic Champion and world record holder in the 200 backstroke, Aaron Peirsol was the third fastest American in the heats of the 200 back, and therefore swam in the B final, in which Matthew Swanston was in.
The current world record holder in almost every event was present at the meet, and in the case of the women’s 200 breaststroke, as an example, the current world record holder, and 3 prior world record holders were all in the event.
Lindsay and Matthew both advanced to finals.  Lindsay advanced to the A final in the 400 IM, finishing 8th overall, and Matthew advanced to the B final of the 200 backstroke, finishing 12th overall, so these were outstanding results for them.

Lindsay:
400 IM            4:45.36        8th
800 free          8:50.75       17th
200 back         2:15.35       23rd
200 IM            2:19.71       27th

Matthew:
200 back          2:01.45       12th
50 back              26.53        20th
100 back            56.34        24th

LOS ANGELES – It was in Victoria at the 2010 Summer National Championships where Swimming Canada finalised the selection for its 2010 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships team. With fifty-six swimmers selected to the team, one of the biggest Canada has ever had, fun things are bound to happen around pool deck.
Before leaving for California, the team stayed in Victoria for some training and team building activities. The Canadian team was also fortunate to have a BBQ with the Honourable Gary Lunn, Minister of State for Sport in Canada at his residence.

SwimCan WebTV is proud to bring you a few behinds the scenes images of Team Canada before they departed for California to stage in LA and compete at the Pan Pacific Championships against Australia, Japan and the United States in Irvine.
