Year started coaching with Stingrays: 2018
Why I Became a Swimming Coach:
My journey in swimming began at age four with the Kaposvár Swim Club under Coach Csutorás. Over the years, my passion for the sport grew beyond personal competition.I became driven to understand swimming at a deeper level and to help athletes realize their full potential. Coaching became the natural path to channel this dedication, allowing me to inspire, guide, and develop swimmers to achieve both personal and competitive excellence.
Biggest influences on my swim coaching career

Coaching with Stingrays Since: December 2008
Why I Became a Swimming Coach:
Having returned to swimming after thirty years (when my children started competitive swimming), I quickly became aware of the fact that many swim clubs/coaches were more interested in quick results rather than the long term development of young athletes. I had been coached, all through my youth, by people like this and was sure that there must be a better way.
Finest Coaching Success:
Every time a child gets out the pool at the end of a tough workout with the desire to return for the next practice.
Biggest influence on career of swimming coaching:
Two coaches that embrace the philosophy of long term goals over immediate success, Rhys Gormley and Christine Green (Barnet Copthall Swimming Club).
Sam’s Academic & Athletic Achievements:
-
Bachelor of Science (Honours) Internet Technology – Buckinghamshire Chiltern University
-
Junior Provincial Qualifier in Zimbabwe (‘75-‘77)

"A young coach that worked with my son put it into words perfectly, “I do not want my athletes to go through what I did”.

Why I became a coach:
I am delighted to be returning to the Stingrays family for another season, and I look forward to work collaboratively with new and old faces within the club. I have been fortunate enough to go through the club as a swimmer, and then as a coach and program director of SPLASH.
The club’s long-standing legacy of excellence is something I am immensely proud to be associated with. I am looking forward to supporting the continued success of the Stingrays and facilitating programs that bring out the best in our young people.
As a life-long Stingray, with an unrivaled enthusiasm for the Stingrays, I hope to help kids set and achieve their goals, build confidence and discipline in their daily lives.

In April I graduated from Simon Fraser University, with a degree in Psychology, and swam on the varsity NCAA team for 5 years. I’ve always had a passion for the sport and highly competitive nature. I look forward to sharing my knowledge and experience with the next generation of swimmers and helping them achieve their goals in and out of the pool.

Year Started Coaching With The Stingrays: 2011
Why I Became a Swim Coach:
After taking a few years off to focus on my family, I am excited to return to the Stingrays for the 2024-2025 season! Growing up in the pool and swimming for the London Aquatic Club for over eight years, the pool became a second home for me, and my love for teaching began to flourish. When I decided it was time to hang up my goggles, I knew I could not step away from the sport that had taught me so much, so I put all of my energy into learning all I could about the fine art of coaching age group swimmers. I started coaching with London at the age of fifteen and continued to work with the club until I graduated from university. My early coaching career began in the club’s grassroots learn-to-swim program, where I learned the fundamentals of stroke development, then I spent four years working as an age group and development assistant coach. After leaving London, I began teaching with the Durham District School Board, where I have taught for over twenty years. Once my children started swimming in the Splash Program, my desire to get involved in swimming returned. One of the main reasons I decided to return to coaching is that it is so rewarding to play a part in the development of young swimmers as athletes and to see these swimmers apply the skills they have learned in the pool to their lives off the pool deck. Working with a swimmer to break down a skill until they master it and then sharing in their joy when they reach their goal is what makes coaching so rewarding!
Finest Coaching Success:
Coaching my younger brother, Joe Bartoch, for two years when he was an age group swimmer. I take great pride that I played a small part in his journey to becoming a two time Olympian and Canadian Record Holder.
